Replacement Spring for Mazda Miata Convertible Top

Although extension springs are not as popular as compression springs, they play a very important role in many applications. Extension springs can be commonly found in applications where a retracting motion is required. A clear example of this are convertible tops in cars.

Many older convertible car models have convertible top mechanisms that require extension springs. Some even require both torsion and extension. These mechanisms play an important role in the opening and closing of the convertible parts. Over the years, and after constant use, these parts and pieces can become worn out and may need to be replaced. Unfortunately, both dealers and manufacturers rarely carry the spring replacements. They may have parts and pieces of the convertible tops that are replaceable but the actual springs aren't always easy to find.

At The Spring Store, we have made finding the right replacement spring easy and fast. We carry a great variety of stock springs and have an easy-to-use tool to help you find just what you need. Our extension spring finder can help you select the right extension spring for your convertible top, or other applications where an extension spring is required.

In fact, some of our clients tend to be in search of extension springs for convertible tops on specific car models. Although we do not carry them by car model, we can help you find the replacement based on their dimensions. All you need to know is the dimensions of the spring you require and you can either do a search online to buy directly, or get assistance from a representative via chat, email, or phone. The most important dimensions to know or have at hand when looking for stock extension springs are: max outer diameter, maximum length inside hooks, either force or distance traveled or both.

converitble top replacement spring

We recently had a customer who contacted us looking for a replacement extension spring for their convertible 1999 Mazda Miata. They purchased part number PE037-240-30568-MW-1500-CO-N-IN, and although they did have to make a slight adjustment to the hook lengths, they found it to be a perfect match for the job.

Here is what he had to say about this:

I just wanted to follow up and let you know that the spring worked out.  I had to make some minor modifications to the spring (the old spring had extend hooks that allowed for better assembly.  I had to bend the CO hook type to properly assemble. It was relatively straightforward. This happens to go to a clamp on the convertible top of a 1999 Mazda Miata.  My generation car was made from 1998 – 2005. In 2016 they made the 1 millionth Miata and each Miata needs two of these springs (at least my generation does). The dealer does not sell the spring, they only sell the clamp assembly which is $250 or so bucks.  So Miata owners (there are quite a few out there) need to then buy the clamp assy, go to a junkyard or look on line for a “like” replacement. This spring was a relatively good like replacement. I would recommend this one or if there were a similar version with extended hooks, that would have been even better.
