Designing a torsional spring can be a more difficult task than other springs like compression and extension. This is because of the many factors involved in your design. From direction of wind, to free position, to figuring out your torsion spring’s torque. Torque is basically the load or working loads of your spring but, because torsion springs exert a rotational force, it does not compress or extend; it torques. These springs travel in degrees of deflection, not in inches or millimeters.

 

 

 

Torsion spring torque is calculated the same way you calculate a working load. To calculate the torque of a torsional spring you must divide the spring rate by the amount of degrees of deflection your spring will be required to travel. This is shown in the following examples and diagram provided.

 

Rate Per Degree x Travel = Torque

Kdeg (x) = F

 

Kdeg =    Rate Per Degree

x        =    Travel

F        =    Torque

 

The examples and diagrams also show how you can use reverse mathematics to calculate the other values related to torsion spring torque. These values are spring rate per degree and travel. To calculate spring rate per degree you must divide the torque by the degrees traveled.

 

Torque ÷ Travel = Rate Per Degree

F ÷ x = Kdeg

 

Kdeg =    Rate Per Degree

x        =    Travel

F        =    Torque

 

The formula to calculate travel is solved by dividing the torque by the spring rate per degree.

 

Torque ÷ Rate Per Degree = Travel

F ÷ Kdeg = x

 

Kdeg =    Rate Per Degree

x        =    Travel

F        =    Torque
